December 15 Weekly Update

Spirit Days

As we bid farewell to 2023, students and staff are invited to dress up:

Thursday, December 21 – Festive wear (ugly sweaters, wear red and/or green, etc.)

Friday, December 22 – PJ Day (wear school-appropriate pajamas, slippers, robes, etc.)

Attendance

Did you know that on Fridays at Marlborough, students in grades 1-5 receive targeted support in reading? Today we noticed many students were absent. Students who do not come to school on Fridays miss out on this crucial support. Please make a priority of sending your child to school every day of the week.

Here are some facts about attendance:

  • By grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level
  • By grade 6, regular attendance is a predictor of high school completion
  • By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores

Tips for improving your child’s school attendance:

  • Listen and show an interest in your child’s day
  • Encourage your child to do well in school and praise their success
  • Help your child maintain daily routines such as eating breakfast, turning off electronics two hours before bedtime, and going to bed early
  • If possible, try to schedule dental and medical appointments after school hours or on days off from school
  • If your child is refusing or avoiding coming to school, ask for help from the school before the problem gets too big
  • Work with the school to improve your child’s attendance
